The New York Jets hired Aaron Glenn as head coach. Thus, the Detroit Lions got two extra draft picks from an amendment to the NFL’s bargaining agreement.
The Detroit Lions will receive third-round picks in the 2025 and 2026 drafts if they lose minority executives or coaches, per regulation. As per bookie pay per head experts, the goal of the 5-year rule is to recognize and reward organizations with a strong pipeline of minority coaches and front-office staff who can be promoted to head coaching positions or general managers. For instance, the Rams received third-round picks in the 2021 and 2022 NFL drafts when the Lions hired Brad Holmes as general manager.
Losing Raheem Morris (now the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons) and Ran Carthon (now the general manager of the Tennessee Titans), respectively, resulted in the 2024 draft compensation choices for the San Francisco 49ers and the Rams. Thus, the 2025 draft will include extra compensatory selections for the 49ers and the Rams.
Lions Get Two Extra Draft Picks
This is Glenn’s first head coaching position, and he’s pretty excited about it. The Jets selected defensive back Glenn in the first round of the 1994 draft. He had three Pro Bowl selections in fifteen NFL seasons with six clubs. In addition, Glenn was the defensive coordinator for the Lions for the past four seasons. He began coaching in the NFL in 2014 as an assistant with the defensive backs.
According to football betting strategies experts, the compensatory draft selections aim to maintain a level playing field in a league that values equality among its members. Also, teams that lose many important veterans to free agency are given compensatory choices.
Minority assistant coaches or front office staff who leave for head coaching or GM jobs are granted compensatory draft picks by their former teams.
Placement of Compensatory Picks
Rounds 3 to 7 feature 32 choices, with the compensating choices at the bottom. The compensatory decisions will be announced in March of the 2025 NFL draft year. Over The Cap predicts that the 49ers, Lions, and Rams will earn compensatory picks in 2025 for hiring minorities, while the Vikings and Dolphins will gain picks for free-agent losses.
In 2003, the NFL mandated that all clubs interview at least one minority applicant to ensure diversity in head coaching hires. The initiative was commemorated in honor of the late Dan Rooney, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and chairman of the league’s diversity committee.
The Rooney Rule changed over the years with the addition of the 2020 incentive for teams to cultivate minority head coaches and general managers. In 2021, the league required clubs to interview at least one external minority candidate for coordinator and two for head coach and general manager positions. Executive positions require interviews with at least one female or minority candidate.
