The Minnesota Vikings signed Brett Rypien after the team waived its draft pick Jaren Hall. The new Vikings QB made it to the roster after being cut from the Bears last Tuesday. Thus, he will be part of the quarterback roster with Nick Mullens and Sam Darnold. First-round pick JJ McCarthy will be out of the season after suffering a knee injury during his preseason debut.
After signing with the NFC North foe Chicago in March, Rypien spent the 2024 offseason with them. On August 1, he had a breakout performance in the Hall of Fame Game, but bad weather ended the game after only 25 minutes. The Bears beat the Texans 21-17 thanks to his three touchdown passes and 11-of-15 passing performance. He accumulated 166 passing yards.
In 2019, Denver signed Rypien as an undrafted rookie. According to bookie PPH solutions experts, he spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Broncos. Nearly two years ago, in a preseason game in Denver, he faced the Vikings and had a 14-of-21 passing performance with 137 yards and an interception.
New Vikings QB Brett Rypien
While in Denver, Rypien shared quarters with several current Vikings offensive coaches, including Chris Kuper and Curtis Modkins, who now coaches the offensive line and running backs. During the 2023 season, he was active for the Rams from September 13th to November 7th before being cut. He subsequently spent time on practice squads with the Seahawks and Jets that year.
According to bookie pay per head reports, Rypien has thrown for 950 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 10 NFL games (four of which he has started).
Mark Rypien, who aided Washington to a 37-24 victory against Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVI on January 26, 1992, and was awarded MVP, is Rypien’s uncle. Interestingly, Minneapolis’s Metrodome was the site of the Super Bowl.
During his fourteen years in the National Football League, Mark Rypien won two Super Bowls (in 1989 and 1991) and was nominated for two more. He was also selected twice for the Associated Press’s Second All-Pro team.
After his initial stint as a Bronco, Rypien went on to attend Boise State and became the Mountain West’s all-time leading passer in passing yards (1,036), completions (1,581), and games with 300 yards (21). Additionally, he surpassed Kellen Moore, who had 16 300-yard games from 2008 to 2011, to become Boise State’s all-time leader in that category.
Rypien was the Offensive Player of the Year for the Mountain West in 2018. After passing for 256 yards (including a touchdown pass vs Fresno State), he was named the Mountain West Championship Offensive MVP in 2017. From there, he threw for 362 yards and two scores in the Las Vegas Bowl game versus Oregon.
Rypien’s Early Life
According to bookie software experts, Rypien played football and baseball at Shadle Park High School in Spokane, Washington, where he was a student.
He was the starting quarterback for all four years of Shadle’s varsity football season. He broke several records, including those for passing yards in a season (4,552), touchdowns (50), career passing yards (13,044), and pass completions (1,006) in Washington state. He also surpassed Moore in all four of these categories. Rypien received early graduation and valedictorian honors.
