The Nebraska Supreme Court receives casino initiative arguments. They are challenging the secretary of state’s decision to stop including legalize horse racetracks and casinos initiatives in the general election ballot.
Secretary of State Bob Evnen said that the proposal doesn’t adhere to the requirements of the ballot for a single topic. Also, the proposal contained vague language. Sponsors of the issue told the Supreme Court that dividing the topic into three separate votes was to comply with the single-topic requirement.
Also, the sponsors said that the court hadn’t withheld a proposed amendment from the ballot due to voter confusion. However, critics of the measure argued that the proposal would allow casinos on tribal lands. Supporters of the measure said that there was no hidden authorization for casinos.
Nebraska Casino Initiative Arguments
According to sportsbook marketing sources, the Supreme Court will have a ruling before the September 11 deadline. That’s when Evnen needs to certify on whether the issue will show up on the ballot or not. Supporters of the measure hope the court will rule in their favor.
The economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe and the Benevolent and Protective Association of the Nebraska Horsemen sponsored the casino initiative. They are found within or near Lincoln, Grand Island, Columbus, Hastings, South Sioux City, and Omaha.
Also, the state will allow the construction of new racetracks if Nebraska voters approved the proposal. According to Pay Per Head King reports, a portion of the revenue from casinos will be for property tax relief.
Analysts estimated that casinos would earn around $65 million. Thus, $45 million will be for property tax relief. According to sponsors of the initiative, casino gambling will improve the declining horse racing industry in Nebraska.
