The Australian state of Queensland fined The Star $68 million as part of the disciplinary action against the casino. Aside from the fine, the government suspended the casino’s license for 90 days. Also, the government will assign an independent manager to supervise The Star’s operations.
Two of the group’s casino licenses in the state will continue to operate through December 1, 2023. Accordingly, the Star needed the deferral to remediate its management and operations and return to a position of appropriateness.
According to a bookie pay per head blog, the Minister was outraged at the breadth of the operations of The Star. The casino welcomed prohibited individuals and offer extravagant incentives to problematic gamblers.
Queensland Fined The Star
According to Bookie Intelligence sources, the country’s financial crimes watchdog concluded that the company did not perform player due diligence on its Queensland properties. Also, it had no management supervision for anti-money laundering frameworks or procedures to monitor suspicious behavior. Lastly, it failed to assess its money laundering risks.
To be paid by The Star, the AU$100 million fine came after identical allegations were made against the group’s Sydney facility. It also led to the appointment of an independent special manager of the group’s Sydney casino.
According to sportsbook pay per head reports, Nick Weeks is the independent manager of the Sydney property. He will also be in charge of the Queensland properties. However, the state named Terri Hamilton as Queensland’s new Assistant Manager.
