Ukraine to Boycott Olympic Qualifying Events with Russian Participants

Ukraine announced that it would not participate in Olympic qualifying events in which there are Russian participants. Minister of the Cabinet Ministers Oleh Nemchinov made the announcement after the IOC said it would allow Belarusian and Russian athletes to compete as neutrals.

In February 2022, the IOC executive board banned athletes from Belarus and Russia from participating in international sporting events. However, the IOC came up with new guidelines that overturned that decision.

Nemchinov said it was not an easy decision. Also, it meant that some Ukrainian athletes would miss their opportunity to be part of the Olympics. However, it seems like Ukrainian athletes agree with their officials’ decision.

Russians in Olympic Qualifying Events

However, he said that boycotting the Olympics should be up to the athletes. Also, athletes should decide whether to participate or not.

Athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport must compete as neutral individuals. Also, they need to adhere to all anti-doping regulations.

The International Olympic Committee has stated that it will decide whether to allow athletes with Russian or Belarusian passports to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Kremlin has branded those regulations as having “elements of discrimination,” according to pay price per head specialists. The United States and more than 30 other “like-minded” countries expressed support for a planned ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international sports.

However, if Russian and Belarusian athletes can compete in Paris 2024, Ukraine’s sports minister warned in January that the country would not rule out a boycott. As a result, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said last week that athletes from Russia and Belarus would “for the foreseeable future” be barred from competing in World Athletics Series Events. Reports from online sportsbook software insiders indicate that the group’s judgment from March 2022 was upheld.
